This picture brings to mind the extraterrestrial beings of H.P. Lovecraft's short stories. The organic forms seem to suggest webbed appendages and gills. It definitely feels amphibious in nature.
I love how it all fits together to create a disorienting whole. As if it is too strange for the human mind to comprehend. The repeated textures & shading throughout the picture makes this cohesive, as opposed to being just a bunch of random shapes drawn next to each other.
I think the minimal amount of "deep" shading allows the viewer to use their own imagination to fill out the three dimensional form in their mind.
The darker center area acts as a home base or reference poin for the eye's wanderings, pulling the viewer back to the center of the picture before allowing it to spin outward again.
This is so wonderful looking! I keep scrolling back up to see if I missed anything. The complexity of the designs and shapes are mesmerizing! You can turn away and look back, due to the darkened emphasis, your eyes will rarely follow the same route to the outer edge of the piece. Wonderful!!
