The first and most striking thing about this piece and all of the pieces in the surreal sketchboook is the nice clean lines. A good clean line like this is something you don't see particularly often these days. It shows an artist that takes great care over their work.
The use of the coffee stain as a starting point for the piece is something you see quite often in sketches by the more traditional artist. However the artist in this instance has better balance between covering up a stain, using the stain as part of the image and just not using the piece of paper. The stain has become part of the design rather than the reason for the design.
The balance of shapes incorporated in the image is excellent it gives an organic feel that has grown on the page. It has a brilliant feel of an other worldly vegtable growth. A great use of line and shade that shows an artist with a love of drawing and the natural woorld but who is always looking for the strange and different around them.
